Delbert L. Batchelor Sr., 88, of Veedersburg, died 11:45 am Monday October 31, 2011 at I.U. Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, Indiana Mr. Batchelor was born October 19, 1923 in Shoals, IN. the son of Frank & Zora Alice (Tolbert) Batchelor. He married Rosella Belle Hale February 15, 1942 in Chrisman, Illinois. She has preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Lucille Spruill in 2011, a grandson, two brothers, Frank “Junior” Batchelor, Jack Lee Batchelor; four sisters, Alene Batchelor, Irene Brown, Martha Knight, and Linda Wigley. Surviving family include two daughters, Nancy Kay Huels, Attica, IN; Beverly Irene (Joe) Harrison, Kingman, IN; a son, Delbert L. (Deborah) Batchelor Jr., Veedersburg; a brother, Chuck (Joan) Batchelor, Rochester, IN; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and expecting the 23rd great-grandchild in Jan. 2012. After graduating from Chrisman High School in 1942, he served his country in the US Army Air Corps from Jan. 1943 to Jan. 1946. During this time he attained the rank of corporal as part of the 2115th Service Aviation Squadron 6th Air Force in the Panama Canal Zone during WWII. He was employed as a meat cutter for 44 years, after moving to Veedersburg in 1962 he was employed by area groceries including Grab-it-Here and Star Market retiring in 1986. After retirement he was employed at Covington IGA Deli part-time. Delbert was a previous commander and 20 year member of Veedersburg American Legion Post #288, and served on the Fountain County War Museum Board. Memorial service will be 3:00 pm Sunday November 13, 2011 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg, with military honors provided by American Legion Post #288. Visitation will begin Sunday at 1:00 pm and continue until time of service at 3:00. Inurnment will be at Cherry Point Cemetery in Chrisman, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be given to American Legion Post #288 in support of Fountain County War Museum, or American Diabetes Association.
