Hannah Lou Helms Smith passed away on Monday, January 19, 2015, at the Woodland Manor Nursing Center. Hannah Lou was born April 15, 1921 in Malvern, Arkansas to Horace H. and Marguerite Helms. The Helms family moved to Veedersburg, Indiana, when Hannah Lou and her brother, Horace were young children. She graduated from Veedersburg High School in 1939. Hannah Lou married Keith C. Smith on October 3, 1943 in Veedersburg. She worked in the office of Harrison Steel for several years following her marriage to Keith. In 1950, Hannah Lou and Keith started Smith Plumbing & Heating. They enjoyed their business for many years. They were active members of the United Methodist Church and many service organizations in the community. Hannah Lou and Keith were avid sport fans of the St. Louis Cardinals and Indiana University basketball. They enjoyed many trips over the years to watch their favorite baseball team play ball in St. Louis. They also enjoyed playing cards, especially “Rook” with a very special group of friends. These lifelong friendships were treasured throughout their lives. Hannah Lou is survived by her children; Keith K. (Ken) Smith of Veedersburg, Jill (David) Crider of Veedersburg, and Susan Ruggero of Algonac, Michigan. Grandchildren; Julie Wilson, Heather Martin, Lisa Culp, K.C. Smith, Barbi Hunt, and John Michael Ruggero. Great grandchildren; Maddi, Kaiti, Ella, Sophi, Caleb, Allie, Grant, Nash, Quinn, and tenth great grandchild due in May. Hannah Lou was preceded in death by her husband Keith (June 3, 1976) and her brother Horace H. Helms, Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Christian Church of Veedersburg or the Veedersburg United Methodist Church. Her family would like to express their appreciation for the loving care she received as a resident of Woodland Manor Nursing Center. Hannah Lou was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be dearly missed by all. Visitation will be 5:00 – 8:00 PM Friday January 23, 2015 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg. Funeral service will be 1:00 PM Saturday January 24, 2015 at the funeral home with Pastor Gary Johnson officiating; burial will follow service at Rockfield Cemetery.
