Richard "Dick" L. Rusk

Richard L. “Dick” Rusk passed away on Sunday November 6, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. He was born November 14, 1923 in Danville, IL. to Cash and Elizabeth Rusk. Dick married Lorna E. Townsend on August 30, 1947. They had celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in August of this year. He was blessed to see 3 generations of family in his 92 years. Four children were born from their marriage: Lynette Rusk of Veedersburg, Mark (Bridget) Rusk of Veedersburg, Janilee (Dennis) McMasters of Veedersburg and Todd (Jena) Rusk of Veedersburg. He had 8 grandchildren: Jennifer (Mark) Summers of Veedersburg, Melissa (Carl) Woodroofe of Spring Hill, FL., Jessica (Craig) Bullard of Carmel, IN., Greg (Heather) Rusk of Manhattan, KS., Scott (Danielle) Rusk of West Lafayette, IN., Matt (Brittaney)Norwood of Monticello IN., Casey (Eli) Hoagland of Veedersburg and Haley Rusk of Savannah, GA . Great grandchildren are Alexis and Nathan Summers, Zion and Isaiah Norwood, Hannah and Taylor Rusk, Dallas and Laney Hoagland, Ella Shea Woodroofe and Lilia Bullard. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers David (Jake), Cash Jr, Bill, Tom Rusk and a sister, Patricia Marrow. Surviving siblings are Roy Rusk of Hutchison, KS and Mary Jo Livengood of Lafayette, IN. 19 Dick proudly served in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska while on active duty. Over his years, he worked several jobs, but was best known for being owner/operator of the Gulf/Shell Station in Veedersburg. He went on to work at and retire from Fountain Central High School. He was a proud 70 year member of the American Legion, served as a volunteer Fire fighter for 50 years and was Fire Chief for many of those years. He served his community as a member of the Veedersburg Town Board, was a member of the United Methodist Church and drove a school bus for FC for many years. He never missed a fire department Fish Fry or Legion dinner. He was selfless in his service to his family and community his entire life. His family was his life and he was ours. Visitation will be at Dickerson Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday November 9th. Funeral Service will be on Thursday November 10th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at Rockfield Cemetery in Veedersburg, with military honors provided by the US Navy and American Legion Post #288. A commemorative service will be held 8:00 PM Wednesday acknowledging Dick’s 50 years with the Veedersburg Fire Department. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Dick’s name to the Veedersburg Fire Department or the local American Legion Chapter.
