Louise Houmes

April 9, 1936 — August 31, 2023

Shirley Louise Houmes, 87, formerly of Covington, passed away at her residence in Veedersburg IN, 3:00 PM Thursday August 31, 2023.

Louise was born April 9, 1936 the daughter of Lafayette and Katherine (Hall) Wagoner in rural Rossville, IL. She married Adrian Houmes Jr August 15, 1954 in Hoopeston. IL; he preceded her in death January 9, 2022.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, a twin sister Lucille Cornell; three brothers, Art, George, Kenny; a daughter, Janice Ocheltree; and a grandson Dustin Houmes.

Surviving family include four children, David L. (Tammy) Houmes, Veedersburg; Bryan A. (Nancy) Houmes, Veedersburg; Patricia D. (Lee) Kirkpatrick, Veedersburg; Mike (Laurie) Houmes, Cayuga; a sister, Mable Bray, Redondo Beach, CA; two grandchildren who she and Adrian raised, Kyle Ocheltree, Anne (Ocheltree) Schrader; 7 additional grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 3 step grandchildren, 7 step great-grandchildren.

Louise graduated from Rossville Alvin High School in 1954, and graduated from Lakeview School of Nursing, Danville, IL, in 1981. She was employed at St Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, IL, in Pediatrics, Psych, and Ambulatory Care; Dillman Eye Clinic in Danville; and was the Fountain Central School Nurse for 13 years, retiring in 2016.

Louise was a member of the Sterling Christian Church. She enjoyed playing the Tuba in Wabash Valley Area Band, crocheting and sewing. She was a seamstress for many years altering prom and wedding dresses. Louise was known as Mrs. Houmes, the babysitter, to several area families. She was also an avid Cubs and IU Basketball Fan.

Visitation 4:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday September 5, 2023 at Dickerson Funeral Home in Veedersburg. Funeral 11:00 AM Wednesday September 6, 2023 at Dickerson Funeral Home, with Pastor Bob Fairchild officiating. Burial at Mt Hope Cemetery in Covington. Memorial contributions may be given to Southeast Fountain Community Foundation.
