Walter "Jake" L Helms

Walter L. “Jake” Helms, 91, of rural Veedersburg, passed away 2:10PM Friday June 7, 2019 at Williamsport Nursing & Rehabilitation, in Williamsport IN.

Jake was born August 22, 1927 in Fountain County Indiana the son of Hardy and Dossie Jane (Bonebrake) Helms. He married Phyllis I. Williams May 29, 1971; she preceded him in death September 5, 2003.

He is also preceded in death by an infant sister, Margaret Helms.

Surviving family include three daughters, Kathy Steele, Riverview FL; Janet (Mike) Olsen, Apollo Beach FL; Tracy Duncan, Apollo Beach FL; two sons, David Helms, Indianapolis IN; Kevin (Lisa) Helms, Byron IL; a sister, Mary Catherine Reffet, Veedersburg IN; fourteen grandchildren, several great and great-great-grandchildren.

Jake attended school in both Yeddo and Kingman before enlisting in the US Navy; where he would serve his country in the European Theater of WWII on board the USS Ransom minesweeping ship. After being honorably discharged from the US Navy he farmed for a few years, and went on to be employed at TeePak in Danville IL for over 30 years in the maintenance department.

He was a passionate IU Basketball fan; he also enjoyed fishing, both locally and the many fishing trips he had taken to Minnesota and Canada over the years.  He had been a member of the F. & A.M. Lodge in Yeddo and member of the Shriner’s in Terre Haute.

Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday June 12, 2019 at Dickerson Funeral Home 303 N Main Veedersburg IN 47987. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday June 13 at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Covington officiating; burial will follow at Bonebrake Cemetery near Veedersburg with Military Honors provided by American legion Post #288.
